Frenchman Cyril Despres has won the 213 Dakar Rally – but it wasn’t easy. A slow(ish) start followed by an engine swap and an ensuing time penalty dropped Despres down the field significantly. But a tough fightback followed and Depres climbed back up the leaderboard, taking the flag after 4,500km of racing. Here are the top five images from the event…
1) This year’s route sent the competitors high into the Andes. Altitude was going to be a problem not normally faced…
2) The Atacama Desert provide a backdrop for all those that wanted sand dunes…
3) Not all the racing was over the dunes. Having the rally in South America provides all sorts of terrain.
4) Depres was out of the running for large parts of the rally. This wasn’t the walkover that most expected.
5) So that’s a fifth win for Despres. Maybe with a fit Marc Como 2014 may be different. Until then, let the Frenchman have his day. A true legend.
