Yamaha MT-07: £5,199

We’re here in sunny Lanzarote for the press launch of Yamaha’s MT-07. Having arrived nice and early, we’ve been teased with a non-runner in the hotel reception, until sampling properly on a 200km ride of the island tomorrow.

The lil’ MT looked lovely in Yamaha’s press images and doesn’t look too shabby in the flesh. Being a budget, A2-friendly middleweight hasn’t stopped the Yamaha engineers dialling in some big-bike substance to the MT family’s latest addition, and the ’07 is very well finished – certainly a step-up from the XJ series and other price-point rivals.

Sharing some components with the MT-09, like wheels and switchgear, the budget non-adjustable suspension is the only sign of any sparrow-limbed cost cutting. That said, the MT-07 is exceptionally priced at £5,199 for the non-ABS version (which is only £200 more than a CBR500). Add another £300 for ABS. It’ll be arriving in the UK ready for ‘14’ plates on the 1st of March, and available in five colours. Check back tomorrow for first impressions of the MT-07.

Not one to brag, I stuck it on the top-step of today’s UK journo kart race. More on that later.

A 180-section rear tyre is a welcome sight
This Aka’ can isn’t standard, unfortunately…
