We’ve gotten together with fine purveyors of rolling rubber, Dunlop, to showcase some of the best roads our fair isle has to offer. And we kick things off with the epic A82 in bonnie Scotland!
We’re starting our round up of the greatest roads in the UK right at the top. Well, not quite the top, but well into Scotland all the same. The A82 is an epic route, starting out almost in the middle of Glasgow and continuously winding its way north all the way to Inverness – that’s 167 miles of Her Maj’s best entertainment (so long as you choose the right time…). Passing the likes of Loch Lomond, Glen Coe, Ben Nevis and Loch Ness it’s firmly on the tourist route with all the ensuing frustrations, but pick the right moment and you’ll have an ethereal ride through some sensational scenery.
Most of it has the potential to be fast, and it’s no surprise to read about speeding convictions born from over enthusiasm in the area. It’s pro-actively policed, so as they say in the booze adverts ‘enjoy in moderation’.
The section pictured here is around Glencoe, the road’s most attractive and intense stretch. Here you’ll find a clutch of challenging corners thrown into the mix, and given the mountainous vistas you should be on your guard for errant tourists gaping at the rocks. If traffic takes its toll, especially around Fort William, there are plenty of interesting detours, making the A82 a thoroughfare of delight in its own right, but also the conduit to new adventures…
